Press Release:

Friends of Silver River State Park Host Annual "Phantoms in the Forest"

The Friends of Silver River State Park, Inc. is sponsoring "Phantoms in the Forest" on Saturday, October 24th, 2009 at 7 Pm at Silver River State Park. Presented by members of the local storytelling group, the Ocali Storytelling Guild, it will be an evening of spooky tales for all ages. Stories will be told from the front porch of the Godwin House in the Cracker Village. Jack O'lanterns and mysterious sounds from the woods add to the Halloween atmosphere. Cider, cookies and other baked goods will be available for sale. There will be a sign language interpreter for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. As in previous years, stories begin as not-so-spooky-at-all for the younger members of the audience and get more chill-worthy as the night goes on. This is the sixth year for this event and each year it is very well-received. Come early for the best seating. Bring a lawn chair or blanket as other seating is very limited. A sweater and/or bug spray may be useful depending on the weather. Park admission is free during the event. Admission to the event is with a canned food doantion. For more details call the park at 352-236-7148.

Local Storytellers Participate in Worldwide TELLABRATION!

November 21-23, 2008 thousands of people around the world will gather in small towns and big cities to enjoy an evening of storytelling. This annual event is known as Tellabration! and since its beginning in 1988, it has grown into one of the most impressive collective events in the history of the modern storytelling revival.

Marion County will once again join in the global Tellabration spirit. This year the Ocali Storytelling Guild will present their Tellabration! concert on Friday, November 21st at Silver River State Park. The storytelling will begin at 6 PM. There is no admission charge for the storytelling concert. Admission to the park is $4.00 per car. Please bring your own chair and dress for an outdoor concert. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be available for sale from the Friends of Silver River.

Taryn Evans, a spokesperson for the event, has this to say about the storytelling concert: “At the same time we’re sharing stories here in Ocala, numerous communities across the globe will be doing the same…listening and telling their own stories. It’s exciting to know that we are part of this worldwide event. For people who have never experienced a storytelling performance, this is a great event to be introduced to the art and an opportunity not to be missed.” The lineup of tellers are all local members of the guild and listeners can expect to hear a gamut of tales from the humorous to the heart-warming. In other words, there will be something for everyone!
